250. Lana Del Rey – Video Games

Sometimes lauded but nevertheless hugely talented, Lana Del Rey caused a stir when she dropped this song (and the accompanying video). Her gangster moll shtick can be a bit tiresome but when you dig past the facade, you have a beautifully tender voice, capable of emotive highs and lows and with enough grit and growl to not be packaged with throwback soul singers.

“Video Games” is a genuinely different track, standing out from most modern day pop – it has a genuinely timeless feel that worldwide sales of 2 million plus deserve.

171. Clams Casino – Waterfalls

I’ve written this three times and it’s been deleted three times. Basically, this is great, epic and fun. Enjoy it.

141. Lana Del Rey – Young & Beautiful (DH Orchestral Version)

If someone played you this track and said it WASN’T Lana Del Rey, you’d be surprised. She’s somehow managed to characterise that epic, morbid string soundscape sound and she does do it so, so well. This track, commissioned for the Great Gatsby film soundtrack (exec produced by Jay Z, no less). There are some definite misses on there (step away from “Back To Black”, Andre 3000) but this nails it head on. The chorus key change is arousing, to say the least.

I’ve plumped for the DH Orchestral Version here, where they’ve turned the Del Reyness up to 11.
